Erbs Palsy

Erb’s Palsy occurs when there is nerve damage to the brachial plexus (a network of nerves).  Most Erb’s palsy cases are due to over-stretching of the infant's plexus during birth.  Sometimes during labor and birth, shoulder dystocia may occur.  This is a condition where a baby’s shoulder gets stuck on the mother’s pelvic bone as the baby travels through the birth canal.  While attempting to dislodge the baby, the doctor supports the baby’s head and applies a small amount of traction.  If the doctor uses excessive traction while the baby is stuck, the brachial plexus may suffer nerve damage, possibly resulting in Erb’s palsy.
 
Doctors must take many factors into consideration when delivering a baby.  Failure to appropriately monitor a mother and child can result in birth complications which may lead to Erb’s palsy.  The following factors may contribute to the occurrence of Erb’s palsy in an infant: failure to estimate the baby's weight before delivery, failure to perform a C- section, failure to inform parents of the risks inherent in vaginally delivering a large infant, and failure to perform appropriate delivery techniques to manage shoulder dystocia.

With Erb’s palsy there are four different types of nerve injuries: including: an avulsion, meaning that the nerve is torn from the spine; a rupture, meaning the nerve is torn but not where it attaches to the spine; a neuroma, meaning the nerve has tried to heal but scar tissue has grown around the injury and the scar tissue puts pressure on the injured nerve; and praxis, meaning that the nerve has been damaged but not torn, and improvement should be seen within three months.

Some victims of Erb’s palsy have no muscle control and no feeling in their arms or hands. Some can move their arms, but have little control over the wrist and hand. Still others can use their hands well, but cannot use the shoulder or elbow.
