Provigil
It has been discovered that Cephalon Inc., the company that sells Provigil, has marketed the drug extensively for off-label uses. Provigil, a drug used to treat symptoms of narcolepsy, is being prescribed to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), fatigue, and depression. Cephalon estimates that nearly 90 percent of all prescriptions for the drug are for off-label uses. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of Provigil to treat conditions like narcolepsy and certain other sleep disorders; and while doctors can use drugs to treat any condition they want, companies can only promote their products for uses approved by the FDA. Cephalon’s promotion of these off-label uses is in violation of FDA safety regulations.
